F.A.Q.

Q: What is Youth for the Voiceless?

Youth for the Voiceless is a youth-based non-profit organization, located in Portland, Oregon, that focuses on amplifying the voices of young animal rights advocates through storytelling and community-building. Y4V also addresses the concept of intersectionality by drawing connections between issues that impact both human and non-human animals, as well as our natural world.

Q: Why the focus on storytelling?

Everyone loves a good story, and everyone has one! Stories not only entertain us, they allow us to better understand one another, and we believe that connecting with others, regardless of our differences, is the first step towards making the world a kinder, more compassionate place.

Q: What qualifies as a “story”?

Stories can take all shapes and forms: poems, videos, written narratives, songs, dance, spoken word, photographs, drawings, paintings, fashion, the list could go on and on. We want to amplify the powerful voices of youth by exploring as many mediums as possible, so whatever creative outlet you most enjoy will make for the best story.

Q: Do you only have events in Portland?

For now, yes. But we’re lucky to live in a time when we can connect with young people all over the world! We have monthly campaigns you can join on Instagram, and if you have a story you would like to share or want to get involved, we’re just an email, a DM, or a message away. Get in touch with us at info@youthforthevoiceless.org or through social media – we would love to hear from you!

Q: What is the age range for Youth for the Voiceless members?

There are lots of ways to get involved, regardless of your age; however, our youth members are 13-19.

Q: I’m a teen. How can I get involved?

We have a number of opportunities! Are you on Instagram? Start following us, and join our social media campaigns! Have a great story or campaign idea? Send it to us! Recently tried a new form of activism, and want to share your experience? Write or record a blog/vlog! Sampled a veg or cruelty-free product, and have some thoughts? Submit a review! We also have ongoing volunteer opportunities, and if you’re in Portland, please join us for local events. Visit our “Get Connected” page for more information on how to get involved!

Q: How can I get involved if I’m an adult?

If you’re an adult, we would love to have your support. We are always looking for people to help us amplify the powerful voices of young activists. Here are just a few ways you can get involved:

  • Follow us on Instagram and/or Facebook, and participate in our social media campaigns
  • Organize an event for youth activists in your area
  • Host a Y4V fundraiser in your town, or start one online through Facebook or Gofundme
  • Volunteer directly for Y4V: from graphic design to outreach, we could use your help!

Please email us at info@youthforthevoiceless.org for more information on how you can support youth activists.

Q: What is “intersectionality”?

While interpretations vary, we believe in advocating for animal rights by also recognizing the plight of other human beings and our natural world. By “connecting the dots” between issues that impact animals, human beings, and the environment, we advocate for a kinder, more compassionate world for everyone who shares this planet with us, as well as the planet itself.
For more information, please check out this TED talk by Kimberly Crenshaw, who coined the term “intersectionality”.
